I know not everyone has years and years of martial arts or self-defense training under their belt, but that doesn’t mean everyone should go around without having any form of self-defense. As much as I wish to show every family member, friend, and colleague how to throw a proper punch, block getting hit, or even get out of a hold – I can’t. Life simply happens.
But, what I can do, is share a few items I have either owned or gifted to loved ones to carry with them every day just in case an uninvited situation were to occur. Like the original weapons (bo staff and sai that we will talk about someday) in martial arts, the best ones are the ones that you can hide in plain sight.
The items listed below are meant for self-defense. I, nor does any traditional martial arts practitioner believe in using these items for any means other than defending yourself in a life or death situation. Remember, you have a right to defend your self.
These are not only have a cool name, but they also make for an incredibly handy weapon. They come in a variety of styles but the concept is always the same – hold it in your hand like you would hold a cup and slam down or move it in a stabbing motion. With a good kubotan, you can damage a few vital organs of your assailant along with smashing your window in case of an emergency.
Keep pepper spray with you, if the assistant can’t see you, they can’t hurt you, right? Not exactly, even if you use the pepper spray, immediately get out of there. The downside of pepper spray is.. it only can help you if you spray it and hit the intended target.
While due to laws limiting taser/stun gun purchases and ownership depending on your location, this one would be more of an “if you can get one, get one” option. One very clear benefit of having a taser/stun gun with you is that you can have something that can easily take someone down.
I keep one of these in my car in the driver’s side door, these little safety hammers are designed to smash your car window in case of an emergency, they also have a flat side that you can use as a hammer, and it has a seatbelt cutter (I like to think of it as a mini multiple purpose self-defense tool).
I know, a flashlight, isn’t the first thing that comes to mind when you think of self-defense weapons. However, this flashlight has an end that you can use in a stabbing motion to knock someone out. It’s also super bright and can temporarily blind someone, giving you time to hit them or run away.
If you like to go to bars or just go out for a night on the town, then definitely get yourself one of these drink cover scrunchies. We already know not everyone you meet will have the best intentions for you, so it’s important to pay attention to your drink. However, it can be such a pain in the arse to pay attention to it all night, so with these, you and your besties can relax and enjoy the evening knowing your drinks are protected.
This is a bit of a different form of self-defense, consider it more of a proactive approach. I travel quite a bit and I love the physical and mental security this portable security lock brings. I’ve used it for the front door of my Apartment, Hotel rooms, and AirBnBs; it’s one of the first things I pack whenever I get ready to go anywhere.
